Understanding Your Skin Type: The First Step to Healthy, Glowing Skin
When choosing skincare products or building a routine, knowing your skin type is key. There are four main—well, let’s say most common—skin types, and almost everyone falls within one of these categories. If you don’t, remember the saying: follow the rule, not the exception. Apply that same logic to your skin!
The Four Common Skin Types
Dry Skin – Feels tight, rough, flaky, or peeling. Lacks natural oil production.
Oily Skin – Looks shiny, produces excess oil, and is prone to breakouts.
Combination Skin – Oily in the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin), while the cheeks are typically dry or matte.
Sensitive Skin – Easily irritated, prone to redness, and may react to certain ingredients.
Quick Test: Find Your Skin Type
Curious about your skin type? Here’s a simple test:
1. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser.
2. Wait 60 seconds—do not apply any products.
3. Observe how your skin feels:
• Tight? You have dry skin.
• Shiny all over? That’s oily skin.
• Only your T-zone is oily? You have combination skin.
• Red or irritated? Likely sensitive skin.
My Truth About Skin Types
Here’s a fact: Most people don’t love the skin they’re in. We tend to want what we don’t have.
I have dry skin, and let me tell you—I never wished for oily skin. To me, dealing with flakes and roughness seemed better than constant breakouts and shine. But here’s the catch: Dry skin ages faster. With little to no natural oil production, it’s more prone to fine lines and wrinkles.
Meanwhile, oily skin? That extra oil actually helps keep skin plump and youthful-looking longer! It’s a trade-off.
